Keys to Innovation in Youth Ministry (Or Anything Else!) for 2021

So, I am no good at predicting the future. If we didn’t all know that in 2020, we certainly know it now. What I do know is that in 2021 youth ministry needs to innovate…and fast. And it needs to be planning for innovation not DURING Covid, but post-Covid. We need to innovate now for the future! We need to do it before the temptation to return to what was expected returns. Now is the time to re-think and dream. Youth ministry has needed to innovate for 50 years. While I can’t predict the future, innovation in youth ministry is something that I know something about!

So, here is the list of keys for innovation for 2021 and beyond!

1. Question Everything- If you aren’t good at asking tough questions about your theology and your ministry now is the time to start. In faith and in innovation questions should WAY outnumber answers. All innovation begins with questions and more questions. “Why do we do it this way?” “What if we tried that?” “How did that experiment go?” “What did we learn just now?” “How do we do it better/more like Jesus?” Question everything in 2021!

2. Seek Understanding- If you don’t know your students and your city you won’t know what direction your ministry should go. What do local leaders say students struggle with? What is your students’ world/home/school actually like? Good missionaries learn about the culture around them and good church innovators do too. Do you really know your town? Why are you certain of that?

3. Observe Details- Good innovators pay attention to how their people use their stuff. What parts of your ministry do students deeply enjoy? Why do they like it? Could you do more of that? What do they love out in the community and could that be a new kind of ministry?

4. Experiment, Evaluate, Repeat- This is the season to emerge and try something new!  Innovators experiment. But, they don’t always believe the mantra that more experiments are better. The best innovators say that isn’t true. Lots of experiments are only good if there are few enough for you to evaluate each one of them. Put together a team that supports each experiment then experiment, evaluate, and repeat. Over and over. Sometimes one experiment combines with another to produce something truly great!

5. Risk Something- I know many of us are vulnerable. We don’t get paid that well. We have families. We may not have cooperative staffs, heads of staff, or healthy church culture. But, if you are able to, take a risk! You cannot innovate without risk. Jesus risked in coming into the world and people are only willing to follow those who are willing to risk first.

6. Cross-Pollinate- The best innovators read outside their jobs, they go to different conferences, and they have coffee with people outside their area. What if you went to an education conference? What if you had coffee with somebody from juvenile probation? What if you joined a local non-profit circle to learn their best practices? The church is way too isolated not just in terms of who we minister to, but who we learn FROM. Most of us aren’t experts at anything if we are honest. Let’s go learn from the best. The best ideas come when innovators go outside their ministries.

7. Fail Shamelessly- Jesus’ earthly ministry only made it 3 years, he didn’t make it far from home, and his 12 best buddies never understood him.  From the outside Jesus’ ministry might have looked like a failure. The Lord loves you and nothing can change that. Failure and mistakes are just lessons learned along the way. And sometimes one failure becomes the key ingredient to a later experiment! But, don’t fail alone. Get the support of your leadership. Make sure you are failing in a group. No mistake can diminish God’s love for you or for your team. So give yourself some grace. Do another new thing. Do it better next time and move forward!

The famous missionary William Carey once said, “Attempt great things for God, expect great things from God.” The Kingdom of God is worth it and so are students! Let’s innovate YM in 2021!

Before we Innovate...

One of the things that I get excited about is the fact that youth ministry circles are starting to finally seriously engage with the topic of innovation. It is much needed and way overdue. Our leaders are tired. Our models are worn. Twitter is full of self marketing and youth ministry products that are a kind of economic ecclesial echo chamber of…stuff. And most importantly we are not producing missional adult disciples of Jesus Christ who are participating in the unfolding of God’s Kingdom in the world.

So, yeah. It’s time for change.

So, it IS exciting to see what is in the wind. But, I also have some concerns.

I have been invited to participate in about 8 different Christian social enterprise/innovation events around the U.S. over the last few years. Most of them have not been related to youth ministry. My biggest concern when innovation, or innovation through Christian enterprise comes up, is that generally speaking we do a terrible job of grounding the goal of innovation in our theology. I was thinking about this again in an acute way over the last few days while simultaneously reading several books on innovation. I started developing some critical questions that I think we need to answer before any individual or org sets out to innovate.

  1. Why are we innovating?- It is a most basic principle of design thinking that you design with the end in mind. We need to thoroughly explain to the church in North America WHY it needs to innovate. I have been serving in churches for 20 years and the majority of them are often clueless about the shifting ground under their feet. Give them a bit of data and rationale. You don’t need to overwhelm them, you do need to equip and educate about what is shifting.

  2. Is God an Innovator?- This is a REALLY important theological question. What makes an innovator? Does God demonstrate those attributes beyond just the act of Creation? Folks need to develop a STOUT theological framework for innovation. If the orgs and programs we create are to reflect the life and movement into the world of the Christ, then we will need conceptual and scriptural grounding. And it will have to be way more than a wink, a nod, and a proof text.

  3. Who are we innovating for?- Are we innovating for youth groups or churches themselves? The students within them? Are we innovating for those outside the church? Are we innovating with the least of these in mind? Are we innovating with a lens toward racial biases? It seems highly likely to me that innovation will simply conform to the regular pattern of the church’s neglect of those outside its boundaries. So, we had better think that through. We don’t want to end up simply with a new kind of more functional church or youth group that is growing/producing the wrong things!

  4. What is required for innovation?- This is a critical question as well that has individual, communal, and institutional dynamics. We need to recognize that while anyone CAN innovate, innovation often springs out of practices, experiences, and ecologies fueled by the Spirit of God. And like all GOOD things in God’s world it is going to cost something in terms of blood sweat and tears to pull it off. Have we counted the cost of doing this work?

  5. Who is doing the innovation?- I have been struck on a number of occasions about the degree to which innovation takes a secular humanistic point of view and assumes the best of human beings or human designed innovation processes. We have to ground all innovation in who God is rather than who we are. It is God who is innovating, not us. Period. End of story. (Philippians 2:13) To ground any creative or innovative activity in our activity is to court danger. Need I remind us that church leaders are reportedly more likely to be narcissistic than in other professions?!?! Need I remind us that most congregations have no thoughtful systems of accountability that intentionally limit power and authority?!? And do we need any reminding that American Christians tend to prefer powerful figures who are charismatic to restrained and wise ones?!?! Any process of innovation must involve safe guards and critical self-exploration at MULTIPLE levels.

  6. What is the innovation process?- A number of the gatherings that I have attended have seemed to ground innovation in some assumptions that never get named. (Big thanks to my friend Andy Root for naming this for me at 4:30 this morning!) If we borrow an innovation process from say, Google, what assumptions does that process make about humans, the marketplace, the pace of transformation in human lives, and the God’s world itself? The key part about a process is that in terms of practical theology, it is our process that reveals more about what we actually believe about God than what we claim to believe. The process and programs we design are the most powerful testimonies to what we REALLY think God is like. What does our process say about God, our neighbor, and God’s world?

This is just a start. But, I think these are some critically important questions for Innovation.

Compounding Interest as a "Confidence Snowball"

Each year at the Forge we take our students through a money management training. One of the key principles of that training is explaining to them how the rule of compounding interest works in their favor in terms of investment, but works against them in terms of debt. It’s a great lesson to teach and it is one that I learned in high school from an honors English teacher of all things. He stopped class for 2 days to teach us about money. It was the only lesson on money I received from anyone in my life as a teen.

Well, the other day I was doing a Zoom call with some local high schoolers and their teacher talked about their need to have experiences. That teacher and I have discussed at length the idea that part of what the Forge is disrupting is the scarcity of experiences that many teens seem to have these days. We do this by giving them jobs, skills, and mentorship. He mentioned that these experiences compound over time in life and I began to think about compounding interest as a social mathematical factor rather than simply as a financial one.

The reality is that investing in human beings operates by the same principles. You need to invest in them early and often and keep moving forward trusting that the good work will compound over time. And just like retirement, the likely returns may not happen while you are around. My faith teaches me this idea repetitively. I serve a God who invests for the long haul rather than the short fire sale. I serve a God whose way of doing and being requires that I trust at every turn without necessarily being able to see the eventual outcome become realized. Half the time I am not even sure what the final picture may look like.

What triggered all of this was that a student’s parent had texted me the other day to let me know that simply bringing her out for a few landscape jobs has boosted her confidence. She is learning that she can earn money and that she is capable of doing things…including socializing. It’s provided an opportunity to compliment her on what she is good at: detail work, following instructions, and keeping moving.

What that mom was saying, without knowing it, was that she can see the downhill roll of a growing “confidence snowball” that is critical to every adolescent becoming a healthy adult. Each one of those experiences with caring adults, caring community, and accomplished tasks will compound over time in terms of her ability to interact, take risks, and clear hurdles. That interest will further compound if we can help this student to realize that she also has a calling to then serve others in a similar fashion. And I remain convinced that kind of outward investment is fulcrum point at which the compounding curve explodes upward. We become most fully human in helping other to become image bearers of God. We begin to lift when our sense of what matters proceeds beyond ourselves. Christ models that. Christianity insists on it.

A Flammable Ecology

There is no question that this Covid thing has been a beast. And it still is. But, even in the midst of that challenge I have been struck by the amazing ministry that is going on and how thankful I am that we have developed the ministries that we have. Our gym and landscape operations are still floating and a new online school partnership has begun. It’s incredible fruit in a time that sometimes has felt rotten.

This past week I was reading (again) the student ministry book, “The Godbearing Life” by Kenda Dean. In the 4th chapter she wades into the story of Moses and the burning bush as an image to describe us joining the Holy Spirit’s work in the lives of students. The idea is that we are and kind of flammable bush waiting to catch Holy fire as ministers and simultaneously we are a bit like Moses who needs to be on the lookout for students who are ready to catch fire. Kenda has a kind of hopeful and expectant lens when she approaches her gospel work. The Holy Spirit is always about to do something! Will we miss it!? She plays with this image over and over again. The bush, the fire, the one journeying through life. It’s one of the best youth ministry books that is out there.

At the end of the chapter she describes the church, the youth worker, the student’s family, and maybe a couple of other things as a kind of “flammable ecology” and it floored me when I read it. I have been trying to describe (for the last few years) what I see happening inside our ministries. Some students simply come to our church. Some simply come for a job. Some come for life skills or for drones. But, it’s when a student navigates several of the systems simultaneously that we seem to see the most gospel transformation. It’s often the student who showed up because a teacher made them, and then they decide they like one of the trainings, and then they need a job, and then they really enjoy their mentor, and then they go to the local college, and then they need help with a vehicle, and then they need affordable housing and a weight program. And then… And then…

It’s all of those things together that are what I call…the juice.

It’s when several symbiotic and interdependent ministries overlap that something combustible happens.

Kenda Dean’s term nails it. It’s a kind of flammable ecosystem in which a species of kid within the system often is forming symbiotic relationships with different elements of the network…and sometimes simultaneously. Adults are also shaped within this system as well though. We are training them in ministry (not well yet!) so that they can serve with excellence. And as they catch fire and grow many of them long to remain in the ecosystem for community or to help others take a similar journey. It’s a kind of interdependence or healthy symbiosis. Likewise the leadership of our different ministries have begun to cross-polinate in unexpected ways. Ideas are shared (practical and theological) and blended over time re-shaping the whole system. When we started this ministry we were all about the life skills and jobs. Now, those remain important, but we would say that human transformation is the overall goal. We know that happens through a variety of means in our emerging ecosystem.

I have been watching this happening for probably the last two years and couldn’t figure out how to name what I saw happening. It’s both theological and environmental. This appeals to me as a theologian pastor who was once both a history major and a forestry major. I have begun playing with ideas like mutualism, commenalism, parasitism, and predation as useful terms to describe what is happening in this ministry. The flammability that is here reminds me of a kind of Pyrophitic plants that require fire to germinate their seeds. Somehow, God seems to be working like that in ministry as well as ecologically. It’s a flammable ecology.

Built for This Time...

I was reading this morning about a medical center in Chicago that had been specifically built a few years back for the outbreak of an infectious disease. Their bed layouts, staff training, equipment, all of it. All of it designed for a moment that they knew would come…eventually. It took eight years. In some ways I feel like this is the story of The Columbia Future Forge right now. We were built for this.

About 5 and a half years ago we started building the Forge (and it wasn’t even the Forge then) with the idea that ministry with teens needed to be done differently. And while that was true, I also built with the idea that ministry as we know it (in general and specifically with teens/young adults) might not remain sustainable in the future. I felt convinced that all non-profits, secular and religious, should be designed with a better model for economic sustainability in mind. At this very moment in time and history I am thankful for that for a variety of reasons.

Part of our design was a revenue based model. We seek to do life transformation work in the lives of teens/young adults in our county through mentorship. We think that every kid needs a mentor. But while that is a wonderful goal, it requires funding to sustain itself. And right now we are benefiting from our design. Our donors give us investment money rather than just donations. They understand that they are n’t simply paying for us to help. They are paying for businesses and empowerment. What this means is that we have always kept capital in reserve for the next business experiment. Many non-profits don’t do that or can’t because they get stuck in a game of program numbers expansion. Our numbers are only allowed to expand as fast as our business can. Right now, part of that reserve capital is keeping us fully staffed and running. Second, because of that investment money we have never had to acquire any equipment or vehicles on margin. In other words, we have no debt. Third, we also have almost no fixed overhead. Our decision to be a church based model has allowed us to keep our costs very low. I take no salary for my work and we only donate monthly funds to our church to cover facility expenses. The average commercial space our size in town would likely cost us between $2,000 (if someone cut us a huge deal) and $6,000 per month. This kind of structuring has allowed ministry to go on in a limited fashion and for us to plan, pray, and hope for the future with relatively minimal stress.

Here is how each of our models is fairing!

The Landscaping Company (Mowtown)- Mowtown has been able to keep mowing and landscaping. Pretty much only our adult workers are out and about, and we pay for them to use separate cars. But, what is remarkable is that we have not lost a single customer due to the economic downturn. In fact, we have added a few. I suspect that this is because our customers are very reluctant to drop our business when they know that 100% of our net profit goes to good places.

The Drone Piloting Program (Forge Drones)- We never monetized this business. We simply didn’t have anyone that wanted to run that sort of business. But, our trainings have gone on because we utilize volunteers to run that program.

The Weight Program (Utmost Athletics)- We have suspended all of our normal weight lifting for the time being, but we have gone to online workouts that we are doing through video. What is great is that we have new students joining us regularly. We have even retained about 40 of our 100 students in some online presence.We have considered charging a small fee for this service, but as of right now it feels good to offer it with no strings attached. And as I said, our robust reserves are allowing us to do that well.

All this is simply to say that we designed ourselves to do good work with less need for emergency support during STABLE circumstances. It is benefiting our ministry greatly right now.

Again, this is precisely why I think we need to design our church ministries (with youth and otherwise) and our non-profits with sustainable revenue streams in mind. It isn’t perfect but it helps. You can’t do that good you are called to do if you can’t sustain the good you are called to do.

If you expect stormy seas, you better build a boat for storms.

It's Time to Come Back to Innovation! Yes, now!

So, after finally finishing my book last year I was pretty worn out on writing to be honest. I was also just out of new ideas. It felt like it was time to hunker down and just make my operation run. Well, now seems like a different kind of time. It feels to me, even in the midst of Covid-19, that this might be precisely the time to Innovate in youth ministry and in the church in general. Let me share with you some thoughts I have been having.

1.) I am not sure that things will ever be the same.

I don’t want to overstate this reality, but on Sunday I spent the better part of 3.5 hours wandering my neighborhoods, praying for churches, and just pondering. As I walked I had this sense that I was in a new kind of open space. Here I was on a Sunday and I wasn’t in a church. I was walking, praying, observing, and actually reflecting at great length with the emotional energy to do it. The open space in my heart and mind seemed to be this idea that I was becoming aware of certain things in my youth ministry’s life that simply didn’t need to exist any longer and other things that were emerging that maybe needed to remain once our quarantine was over.

And this is not to say that all the old things are going to pass away. I have seen a few of those blog posts this week. Rather, old and new might be combining into new News, so to speak. In her book, The Great Emergence which I read many years ago, Phylis Tickle writes:

“From time to time the only way to understandwhat is currently happening to us as 21st century Christians in North America is first to understand that about every 500 years the Church feels compelled to hold a giant rummage sale. And we are living in and through one of those five-hundred-year sales” Tickle meant that when she wrote it. If the sale had started then, this virus and its attendant changes may have catapulted into high gear now.

My sense is that things were dying, being born, and being reborn all at the same time. And for those of us that are wired for the staid and the status quo, it could feel pretty disorienting.

Will people come back to church after this?

Will this reveal their deep need for God, the church, and Christian community or simply confirm their suspicions about the relative irrelevancy of the whole enterprise? Crisis tends to erode polite fictions rather quickly.

2.) This may be there real birth of the kingdom based social enterprise movement.

Throughout this week I have been deeply thankful for the ministry model we have been building. While the economic numbers are scary, our insistence on building a church based social enterprise that has minimal rent, no debt, and a sustainable revenue stream is paying remarkable dividends! Unlike many non-profits, we don’t spend tons on program. We also keep healthy amounts of cash in reserve. We do that out of a desire to figure out what the next business/ministry leap might be. But, in this moment of crisis, that cash reserve will allow us to survive. Since we own all of our equipment outright, if the worst happens we can always shut down a re-start! Don’t get me wrong, this thing could still take the legs right out from under us, but we are poised to weather it better than many ministries if it drags out for a while.

We all knew, before this, that church attendance and giving patterns were on the decline. I have long felt like we need to take our focus off of that “problem” and instead focus on building intriguing models of ministry that would actually inspire people to participate and compel them to part with their hard earned dollars. If we knew that before, we certainly know it now. Going forward from this crisis we will need to build ministries that do business. Many many businesses have been conceived and launched during downturns and this might be the time. It’s time to build self sustaining models (for-profit and non-profit) that generate return and accomplish compelling Kingdom work!

3.) It is precisely time to INNOVATE-

I mentioned the head space to think and dream above that this time represents. One way to think about this time is as a partial sabbatical from all our toxic busy in our culture. It may feel like our backs are against the wall, but my entrepreneurial experience tells me that when your back is against the wall you are most likely to discover your resourcefulness and grit! Now is not the time to retreat and to reify! Now is not the time to double down on what was! Now is the time to conceive of something new. Now is the time to reflect on what ministry is worth doing ministry for. People and systems are crumbling and bursting open. This is the time to run through the gaps in the line. Hunker down where you must, but explode with hope, glory, and Kingdom vision where you can!

Un-Famous at Seattle Pacific University

A few weeks ago I was able to attend a gathering at Seattle Pacific University called UnFamous. It was a gathering of institutional leaders (seminaries, colleges, foundations), social enterprise practitioners, and other folks with varying degrees of interest in whether or not the church can serve as an effective vehicle/partner for social enterprise from a faith based perspective. It was a good use of time.

The gathering was something I had instigated because a local trust, the Murdock Trust, had offered out loud in front of me to host such a gathering. I called them up a while later and asked if they were serious about that offering. When they said they were, I acknowledged that I was not such a person to lead that gathering, but that I knew people who were and the ball started rolling. The ball eventually stopped in Seattle with a gathering of about 55 folks.

There were three main components to the gathering. Key partners listened to the overall conversations going on and gave plenary sessions (20-25 minutes) on what they were digesting. Practitioners of social enterprise delivered 10 minute Ted Talks about their particular expressions of social enterprise in the church. There were also break out groups on the last day where we tried to decide what the action points for this kind of movement needed to be going forward.

There are several things you should know about this gathering:

1.) It was one of the first of its kind and it signals that the conversation about social enterprise in the church is starting to gain traction. I do not recall a time I felt less isolated as a faith based practitioner of social enterprise than at this gathering. There are many Christian ministries that gather around helping people talk about faith and work, there are not a lot actually combining the two. This kind of work is well off the maps of many faith based institutions…and it shouldn’t be.

2.) It was diverse. We had a good representation of race, gender, socio-economic status. This produced respectful but intense conversations about a whole variety of topics. Some people in the room disagreed about the nature of reconciliation. There was some tension between various minority groups with one another. There were thick discussions about access to capital for minorities and divergent contexts when it comes to churches thinking about social enterprise. We even delved into reparations late one evening. Yet, despite all that difference (and I am sure there was much conversation that I was rightfully not privy to as a white dude) those conversations were done well, I think, in the spirit of the gospel. No one was treated as enemy, but truths were told. Good work was done.

3.) Secondary Diversity- There was also a clear sense of diversity in terms of economics and even defining social enterprise. A number of folks disagreed about what to call this kind of faith based work. Some called it “redemptive entrepreneurship”. Others called it, “Christian social enterprise”. Some folks felt that they didn’t want any sort of separate Christian terminology applied to social entrepreneurship at all. They simply felt that Christians need to simply engage the good work that God is doing in the world and that as long as it is good, why should we put our separate label on it. I share some of these same suspicions, but not all of them. We also had differing senses about what social enterprise even means. Is it for-profit, non-profit, etc? Must it be overtly social justice oriented or simply seeking the betterment of all with a justice bent?

4.) It was fruitful- As I mentioned earlier, people that do the work that I do often feel pretty isolated in their work. For the past 5 years I have often felt that while I knew others were out there doing similar work, I didn’t know exactly where they were. Many times I initiated conversations with various economic networks and foundations in the church, and even donors, and I found them to be confused by what I was talking about. The idea that you could do ministry and business as the same vehicle was foreign to them. So, while the diversity of the gathering produced some tension and loving conflict and while it felt a little all over the place at times, it did manage to connect previously isolated networks. This was liberating and exciting. It was thrilling to see the diverse expressions of social enterprise within the church.

5.) It was preliminary- To me, it felt like we need more of these gatherings. I think we need 5 or 6 of these a year around the United States for the next 5 years. I am not sure that mass gatherings (500-6,000) are what is needed in this kind of space. We need gatherings that feel more intimate and contextual/regional. I would think that we need to maintain a high degree of diversity, but we might need to gather around more focused ministry goals or regional areas where collaboration might lead to leveraged impact. We would especially need a greater number of true investors at these gathering and folks inside and outside the church. True leveraged impact through cooperative collaboration will not be possible without that kind of cross-pollination. Some of those important focus points.

5.) It reminded me how unique the Forge ministry is- One of the things that surprised me at this gathering and that continues to surprise me is that there are not many people who have intentionally combined ecclesial work with economics the way that I have through the Forge. I remain convinced that what I have done seems obvious and that there must be folks out there doing this similarly to us, but I haven’t found them yet. It’s also the fact that we are embedded inside a church (though we are a separate 501c3) that also makes us unique. This is not to say that our work is better or unique in that nature of the work itself. There are many teen job programs that at least have some foot in the marketplace. But, the context, intentionality, and focused theological reflection on our work are particularly unique so far.

Transformation, Transmogrification, or Transfiguration?

One of the things that has happened over the 5 years we have been running our Forge program is that we have gradually gathered around some values that matter to us. Values are often something people tend to confuse with ideals. Many people in the churches that I have worked in have tended to think of values as something along the lines of aspirations. They think about their church or organization and think about what they would like it to be one day. Values aren’t that.

Values are ideas and ethics that already exist within your organization. They are reflexive tendencies that shape the way you shape your programs and relationships within your community/organization. Along with your mission and vision, when clear, values tend to shape what you and your fellow supporters see as inside and outside the scope of who you are. They aren’t so much who you are or what you do, as they are the way you do what you do together. And I don’t think you can just sit down and write them down one day. They tend to emerge from the life of an organization/ministry over time. They emerge from actually doing what you do. I tend to find that we have tripped over a value when we make statements like, “That isn’t who we want to be.” Or, “That feels more like the way we want to go about doing this work.”

Well, it feels like in the last 1.5 years some clear values have started to emerge for our Forge ministry. We have lived enough life together to begin to name some of those values. Perhaps the most key value for us is that we believe that all human transformation happens at the pace of human relationships.

Our ministry has realized over time that our community has plenty of programs. We have lots and lots of places that kids can get services for different kinds of things. We have lots of places in our community where people can get better at things (sports, music, tech, etc.) And while programs do a lot of good, students are often left with the sense that they are a commodity in someone else’s self actualization. What I mean is that each coach, teacher, and minister wants to know that what they do each day as they get out of bed matters. I want to know that my youth ministry matters. The unfortunate side effect of this desire for me to feel like I have meaning is that it creates a temptation to want to make an impact on things and people. This can often reduce teenagers to cogs in our own personal quest for meaning. This is why a music teacher is offended when a kid in my church chooses in my chooses a humanitarian aid trip over music camp and questions her commitment to music. This is why a swim coach lets an athlete know, the moment they get out of the pool (after swimming a record time) that it wasn’t nearly their best. Christians are not (ideally) in the program business or even in the get to heaven business. At our core, we are in the rescue and transformation business.

When I think of why God exists in human relationship with people it is all about a giant, eons long, painstaking, and long suffering RESCUE OPERATION. The whole project of God on our behalf is an effort on the part of God to rescue and restore us. It is not about getting us to somewhere and apparently it isn’t about getting us right or perfect. If that were the case, none of us would be welcome in this project. So, what is it about? It’s about a God who wants to rescue us from ourselves.

So, the question then becomes how are humans rescued? How is it that we come to be changed and shaped? And what does it look like for us to imitate the shape and form of that rescue operation in our own ministries?

Well, I think Christian ministries can take 3 forms.

  1. Transmogrification Ministries

  2. Transformation Ministries

  3. Transfiguration Ministries

The first form of ministry that often happens in many places in our world, not least of which is the church, is transmogrification. My oldest child reads Calvin and Hobbes on a regular basis and one of my favorite cartoons is when Calvin makes a “Transmogrifier” out of a cardboard box. I had always thought it was a made up kid word until I looked it up. It turns out to be transmogrified means to be transformed, but in a kind of humorous, ridiculous, or bizarre way.

Many of our ministries, because they desire to make an impact, can turn people into odd Christian caricatures. They function as bizarre transmogrifiers. You have seen folks like this. People whose ministries or programs so desperately want to demonstrate transformation that they almost force it on people. The people become walking televangelists for this or that. They become so awkward that you begin to wonder if they believe their own story of transformation, or whether is it simply a kind of incantational mantra meant to hypnotize. Transmogrification is the sort of ministry where a quality ministry ideal goes into the machine and something along the lines of a Chinese knockoff product comes out. See below. It looks like what you wanted, but it really isn’t.

Many Christian ministries produce people like this. Partially this happens because their ministry ideals are so desperately high. Partially this happens because they believe that their ministries exist to “produce” people at all…sometimes even on a mass scale. These are not the ministries we want to create.

A second healthier version of Christian ministry is working for positive human transformation. This is the kind of work that takes hours and hours of relational time. It is the sort of ministry that is patient, loving, and long suffering. It does not exist to make me feel better or more charitable. It does not exist to give one a sense of accomplishment or meaning. It exists to benefit the other person. It does not treat them as an object to be transformed. It honors their agency and autonomy. I don’t believe these relationships are truly co-equal, but they should be highly mutual. In good transformational ministry both parties are transformed!

This sort of transformation requires another human being to engage. To push this back into the realm of the obviously theological, this is why God enters into the world. Human transformation cannot be accomplished, apparently, without flesh on flesh. Sacrifices must be made in order for transformation to happen. Somebody somewhere is going to have to give something up and lay something (probably themselves) down for the sake of the other. Blood. Sweat. Tears. They are going to have to enter into our suffering rather than simply offering empathy and sympathy.

The simple truth (and it’s become one of our Forge values) is that human transformation requires human relationship. It’s not a program or a machine. This is why God must break into the world. We cannot expect human beings to pray a prayer or take a class and see transformation. We cannot expect to see a neighborhood or community transformed only because a rec center was built. Until human beings are willing to invest in human beings true transformation will never happen. It is long, slow, grinding work that is NEVER finished. No human being ever reaches a finish line because we are never completed creations of God.

But, the true jazz of human work and the gospel is transfiguration work. Transfiguration implies a kind of exalting or lifting up. One might say that transformational work leads to transfiguration. Transfigurational ministry happens when the countenance and spirit of a person to is lifted to a new summit. It’s byproducts are hope and joy. Utimately, gospel work is about transfiguration. It’s about painstaking transformations, slow positive human erosions and constructions supported by the scaffolding and spires of dozens of caring human beings, that eventually elevate another person to LIFE. Irenaeus was once purported to have said that “the glory of God was a human being fully alive.” Transfiguration is when we see someone come to life and the radiance and resonance of that moment is profound. So, how do we go about transfigurational ministry?

We don’t.

My experience in ministry tells me that transfiguration happens through God alone. Heck, I am not even sure I am really capable of transformation! I know we can’t produce transfiguration. But, the divine moment when you look at a student or human and recognize that something is completely transformed, is beyond our creative capacities. It is the exclusive product of divine action. It is wonderfully beyond our control and measurement. It emerges from unexpected places and unexpected moments and shocks us. It violates our sense of what we once thought was possible. Transformation is uncommon because it takes so much work, time, and energy. Transfiguration is miraculous because it is impossible until it happens.

In the ministries I run, we value doing the right ministry, the right way, at the right pace. We think that transformation is often something that happens over years and perhaps even over generations. It is work that is difficult and requires mutual relationship. It is not possible without the Spirit. It does not produce a Christian caricature, but the real McCoy that only God can see and draw out of each one of us. Every once in a while we see a true transfiguration and we give thanks and plod on.

It’s a wonderful calling.
